National Laboratory for Energy and Geology
LNEG, the Portuguese National Institution for Energy and Geology, is a State Laboratory attached to the Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning and Energy, which carries out advanced R&D work. Its mission is to promote technological innovation in the fields of energy and geology focused on science and technology, with the overriding objective of raising company competitiveness within a framework of sustainable economic progress.
Within the scope of governmental strategies and policies for economic and social development, LNEG takes up the role of an interface between results generated by R&D programmes and their effective technological integration into the private sector.
LNEG also acts as a consultant for public policies in a wide range of fields including renewable energies, energetic efficiency and geological resources.
The Unit of Bioenergy (UB) of LNEG is the largest R&D unit of LNEG with almost 70 members, being 30 PhD staff. The unit has currently five R&D Programmes, being one of them focused on Microalgae for Bioenergy.
UB staff members have more than 25 years’ experience in lab and pilot plant production of microalgae using raceways, closed photobioreactors and fermentors. LNEG has its research and development activity in Lisbon (Campus of Lumiar).
